Quarter 1 Week 6

Hello Second Grade Families,

Important News:
Library - Please make sure your child brings their book back every week, so they are able to check out a new book each week. Any lost library books will have a fine of $20 or you will need to replace with another copy so please practice the virtue of responsibility with your scholar. They will have the choice of leaving them at school or they will bring them home in backpacks until their class library day.

Picture Day- Is on Wednesday. Regular uniforms are required for picture day. Parents are able to preorder pictures. Teachers or photographers are not allowed to take money on this day, they must be purchased online. Lower School Order Link

Lower School Athletic Field Day - 2nd Grade's day will be on Wednesday, October 29th. All students must wear the t-shirt of their assigned City-State on field day. Shirts may be purchased new or borrowed from a friend. All new shirts will be delivered to students the week of field day. If purchase of a new shirt is a financial hardship, please contact Brooke Schultze for assistance.

Content Corner This Week:

Math - 
Scholars will be finishing Chapter 1 this week. They will be starting Chapter 2 that will be going over addition strategies within 1,000. They will be learning their first strategy of counting on when given a number tape.

Chapter 1 Test Review - Sent home Monday, September 15th

Please have your scholar teach you how to do 1 or 2 problems to help them review these concepts. Sign and return the next day.

Chapter 1 Unit Assessment - Tuesday, September 16th


Spalding - 
Phonograms: 
We are starting to work through all 70 phonograms each week. We recommend choosing a few each night to review with your scholar.

Spelling Words: burn, camp, bear, bare, clear, clean, spell, poor, finish, hurt, maybe, across, tonight, tenth, sir, these, those, club, seen, see, felt, full, fail, setting, set, stamp, light, come, coming, night

Spelling Test on Friday! 
Don't forget your scholar has Spalding homework 
Monday-Thursday.
It is located inside their red folder.

Grammar - 
Learning how to identify the type of sentence according to the end mark. 
(declarative, interrogative, exclamatory)

History - 
Unit: Ancient India
Finishing Ancient India unit by completing their unit assessment. This is also freedom week so scholars will learn about the Preamble and its meaning by connecting pictures with key vocabulary.


Science -
Unit: Properties of Matter
They will be discovering how matter can be taken apart and put back together again. They will also be learning about the scientist Dmitri Mendeleev and his contribution to science of the periodic table.

Literature -
Reading Charlotte's Web Chapters 2-5 this week.

They will be reading and answering comprehension questions with each chapter.

Reading Log-
Each day, students are reading a book from their home library for a minimum of 20 minutes. At home, students will read this book aloud to an adult.

Each day please log:
1. The title of the book from home.

2. The total minutes your student spent reading (20 minutes minimum each night).

3. Parent initials confirming minutes read. 

Please make sure you scholar is reading each night and this log is filled out and turned in on the following MONDAY.


Poem -
"Where Go the Boats" by Robert Louis Stevenson
DUE: SEPTEMBER 29th
Please help your child practice nightly. They are required to speak the title, author and poem from memory in front of their classmates.
