Quarter 3 Week 5

Monday, February 6th

Hello Families,

This week is a very busy week for your 2nd grader. They will be going on their Field Trip to the Natural Bridge Caverns on Thursday, February 8th. On Friday, February 9th is Friendship Day here at GHNO. This is an optional activity. If you choose to participate, please observe the following guidelines:
  • Scholars should make one card for each person in the class.
  • Cards should be homemade (not store bought).
  • Cards should focus on the virtue of friendship and NOT Valentine's Day. (i.e. "You are a great friend" or "Thank you for being my friend.")
  • NO candy!
  • Please send completed cards to school in a Ziplock bag on Tuesday February 7th.
  • Cards may be addressed "To my friend," or the class list may be used to address cards individually.
Class Pictures will be on Tuesday, February 6th. 

This week we will be learning:

Spalding:

Phonograms: We are starting to work through all 70 phonograms each week. We recommend choose a few each night to review with your scholar.

Spelling Words: history, study, himself, matter, use, thought, person, nor, or, January, mean, vote, court, copy, act, been, be, yesterday, among, doctor, question, quest, size, December, dozen, there, their, they're, tax, number.

 
Spelling Test on Friday! 

Don't forget your scholar had Spalding homework Monday-Thursday.
It is located inside their red folder.

Literature: 

Your scholar will be starting the classic to keep "Little House in the Big Woods" this week. They will be working on reading comprehension skills, listening skills and answering questions about the text. If your scholar has not brought their book to school send it with them this week.

Reading Log:

Each day, students will bring home a book of choice from the GHNO classroom library. At home, students will read this book aloud to an adult

Each day please log:

 1. The title of the classroom library book read.

 2. The total minutes your student spent reading (20 minutes minimum).

 3. Parent initials confirming minutes read.

Please make sure your scholar is reading and this log is filled out and turned in on Mondays.  

It will be counted as a quiz grade


Grammar:
Your scholar will be writing  their own two-point expository paragraph. They will be starting with an outline, making edits along the way, writing a rough draft, and finishing with a final draft at the end of the week.
 
 
Math:
Your scholar will learning about bar modeling using addition and subtraction word problems. Along with learning how to draw the bar model to match the information given in the word problem. There will be sent home a review on Tuesday, please review with your scholar, sign and return.


Please make sure your scholar is completing their math homework nightly when assigned. 
 
 
History:
 
Your scholar will be starting a new unit, Moving West. They will be learning about westward expansion.

 

Science:
Your scholar will be going on the 2nd Grade Field Trip to the Natural Bridge Caverns on Thursday, February 8th.

Your scholar will be practicing at school but we highly encourage parents to help their scholar practice each day at home. Making sure that they are showing expression, following punctuation, and saying the title and author.
