Quarter 4 Week 9

 Monday, May 13th

We are fast approaching the end of the school year, please keep a few things in mind when planning for vacation. The first is that at GHNO, we continue instruction and learning until the very last day of school, May 29th. The second is that on Thursday, May 29th, we will have a cumulative math assessment as well as a final Spalding test. These tests will not be given early. Please plan to have your scholar present for these assessments. 

This week we will be learning:

Spalding:

Phonograms: We are starting to work through all 70 phonograms each week. We recommend choose a few each night to review with your scholar.

Spelling Words: cautious, caution, cellar, covered, another, tripped, trip, list, people, ever, curtain, declared, declare, held, church, once, one, own, before, distance, distant, explain, floated, ghost, know, no, dead, leave, early

Cursive: We will continue to having our weekly phonograms, homework, and spelling test in cursive.

Spelling Test on Friday! 

Don't forget your scholar has Spalding homework Monday-Thursday.
It is located inside their red folder.

Literature: 

Your scholar will start our last classic to keep "A Cricket in Time Square" by George Selden. Scholars will be identifying setting and character motives (character traits), definition of personification, practice fluency and decoding, and recognize anthropomorphism.

Reading Log:

Each day, students will bring home a book of choice from the GHNO classroom library. At home, students will read this book aloud to an adult

Each day please log:

 1. The title of the classroom library book read.

 2. The total minutes your student spent reading (20 minutes minimum).

 3. Parent initials confirming minutes read.

Please make sure your scholar is reading and this log is filled out and turned in on Mondays.  

It will be counted as a quiz grade


Grammar:
Your scholar will be completing their 2nd grade reflections writing. They will have editing homework Tuesday night. Please assist with spelling, grammar, and wording of sentences.
 
 
Math:
Your scholar will discover an introduction too fractions. We will be looking at how a fraction is created, shaded and unshaded parts, looking at the wholes, and looking at different shapes. 
   
 
  Please make sure your scholar is completing their math homework nightly when assigned. 
 
 
History:
 
Your scholar will be finishing the Unit on Civil Rights. We will be reviewing that people that contributed to the Civil Rights Movement. We will review Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, Cesar Chavez and Rosa Parks. They will also be learning about a few other people, Standing Bear, Dorothy Vaughan, Kathrine Johnson and Mary Jackson.

UNIT TEST on Thursday, May 22nd 

Science:
Your scholar will identifying locations where water can be found, the difference between fresh and salt water and how fresh and salt water are natural resources. They will so be learning about precipitation and the stages of the Water Cycle.

Meteorologist Homework sent home on Thursday, May 15th (Due Friday, May 16th)

Due: May 19th

Your scholar will be practicing at school but we highly encourage parents to help their scholar practice each day at home. Making sure that they are showing expression, following punctuation, and saying the title and author.  

 

End of Year Happenings!
As we near the last day of school, your student will begin bringing home items they no longer need in the classroom such as supply boxes, books, folders, notebooks, & workbooks. This will help avoid your students having a huge, heavy bag on the last day of school.
