Quarter 1 Week 3

Hello Second Grade Families,

We are in our third week of the school year. Our homework routine will continue to grow, as you will see this week as we will be starting Spalding words for daily homework. Please note the homework is graded each night, and points will be taken off if it is turned in late.

We will introduce each of the words in class by breaking it apart, looking for phonograms, and reciting the different rules that go with each. Please be sure to carefully review the instructions at the top. Please dictate the words to your child. Parent says word, then says word in a sentence, then say the word again. Child says and writes word with the markings/syllables without looking at the front page. Parent helps child make corrections, before moving on to the next word. When you complete the list, your child will need to fold their sheet of paper so the words do not show. Repeat the entire process again, however child will write the word without syllables/markings. Each word will have been practiced as total of 2 times.

Child should use the lined paper provided for Spalding homework and write their name at the top. The intention of this homework is to practice applying phonogram knowledge to spelling, a well as to practice letter formation. Please instruct your child to use their best handwriting and to rewrite any words that were not written with care.

Letter formation, pencil grip, and other Spalding resources can be found inside your scholar's red folder behind their behavior calendar.

Each day we practice our phonograms as a whole class and we strongly suggest that every student have a set of Spalding phonogram flash cards to review during homework time each day. The cards are available for purchase via the Spalding International website or at curriculum night on Tuesday.

Their is also a Spalding app that can be purchase through your phone app store that will be able to provide you with the correct pronunciation of each phonogram and correct letter formation.
