Quarter 2 Week 2

Hello Second Grade Families,

Character Dress Up Day (Oct. 24th): Costume proposal forms were sent home on Monday, September 29th inside your scholars red folder. These forms must be filled out and returned on or before Wednesday, October 22nd. The costume MUST be approved by the teacher before being able to wear on the 24th.

Guidelines for Character Dress Up Day:
  • Students who do not wish to wear a costume should come to school in his or her regular uniform.
  • Students must fill out a "Costume Proposal Slip" and turn it into their teacher on or before Wednesday, October 22nd and must be approved by the teacher.
  • No character masks, or all-over face paint (freckles, mustaches, etc. are okay).
  • Hats, gloves, ears, etc. are acceptable as long as they stay on and are not a distraction (teacher will ask student to keep in backpack for the remainder of the day if this happens).
  • No props, such as weapons, baskets, wands, etc.
  • Please keep in mind students will be going to recess in their costumes, so make it one that allows free movement in encouraged.

Charlotte's Web Literature Celebration: Our first celebration is coming up next month on Tuesday, October 28thIt will be celebrated during the school day from 1:30-3:00. The sign up has been re-opened for the last remaining items needed for the celebration to be successful! Thank you for your generosity!

Veterans Day: Faculty, staff, and students are invited to honor their family members who have served in the military by filling out a short info form and attaching a photo to be displayed in the library on November 11, which is a school day. Please note photos will not be returned so just send in a copy of your veteran's photo. Forms will be sent home with students today (Monday, October 20th). Please return the form to school by Friday, October 31st. Thank you to all those who have served!

Content Corner This Week:

Math - 
Scholars this week will be learning the foundations to renaming in a given addition problem. They will be using number bonds, base-ten blocks, and place value chart. Alongside they will be learning how to write and show their work in a vertical equation.

They will be using a hands on approach with using base-ten blocks during each days lesson.

Spalding - 
Phonograms: 
We are starting to work through all 70 phonograms each week. We recommend choosing a few each night to review with your scholar.

Grammar - 
Scholars will be learning about what makes up a simple subject, simple predicate, complete subject, and complete predicate. They will be learning how to divide a given sentence into these different parts.

History - 
Unit: Ancient China
Scholars will be finishing up this unit their unit test and a reading of the Nian Monster.

Science -
Unit: Organism and Their Habitats
Students will continue learning about animals and the habitats they are able to survive inside of. They will also be explore, investigate, and record some of the unique stages that snimals, plants, and insects undergo during their life cycles.

Life Cycle Project passed out on Wednesday, October 22nd
Due on Thursday, November 13th

Project Guidlines:
  • Your student has been assigned an animal or insect to do research on their life cycle.
  • All students have been provided a manilla folder (pamphlet folder) in addition to blank copy paper they can use to draw and list their details.
  • You project should only be of the animal you were assigned.
  • The project can be as creative as you would like! Words and pictures can be either handwritten/drawn or printed to be included on the pamphlet.
  • Must have:
    • The type of animal.
    • Facts about its habitat and a picture of its natural habitat.
    • The life cycle must be shown in pictures with each stage properly labeled and in correct order.
    • Facts about the animal's basic needs.
    • Include on the back of pamphlet any resources used either books or online.

Literature -
Reading Charlotte's Web Chapters 18-21 this week.
They will be reading and answering comprehension questions with each chapter.

Reading Log-
Each day, students are reading a book from their home library for a minimum of 20 minutes. At home, students will read this book aloud to an adult.

Each day please log:
1. The title of the book from home.

2. The total minutes your student spent reading (20 minutes minimum each night).

3. Parent initials confirming minutes read. 

Please make sure you scholar is reading each night and this log is filled out and turned in on MONDAY.


Poem -

DUE: November 10th
Please help your child practice nightly. They are required to speak the title, author and poem from memory in front of their classmates.
