Quarter 3 Week 5

Hello Second Grade Families,

2nd Grade Field Trip Information:
We will be visiting the Natural Bridge Caverns on February 18th, 2026.
All students must ride the bus to and from the venue.
  • The option for Sack lunch has closed. If you have chosen a sack lunch it will include a turkey sandwich with baby carrots, ranch, juice or fresh fruit, and bottled water.
  • If bringing a lunch from home, please use a disposable bag and items that can be through away.
Students will wear their uniforms and good tennis shoes for the field trip. The caves can be slippery at times.

Westward Expansion Celebration:
We will be celebrating this event on March 3rd, 2026 from 1:30-3:00. If you are willing and able, please review the signup and help us with what you can to make this event memorable.

Non-perishables items are needed by Monday, March 2nd.
All food items are needed on the day of celebration on Tuesday, March 3rd.

Content Corner This Week:
Math - 
Unit: Bar Model w/ Word Problems (Addition and Subtraction)
We will be continuing our unit that will include word problems and using bar models to help explain the problem with a structured and laid out format.

They will be using a hands on approach with using base-ten blocks during each days lesson.

Videos were sent home on the weekly blog email if you need help!

Please check agendas/red folders for homework when assigned.

Spalding - 
WE ARE CONTINUING CURSIVE!!

Phonograms: 
We are starting to work through all 70 phonograms each week. We recommend choosing a few each night to review with your scholar.

Your child's red folder will now include information about Spalding cursive letter formation. This will most likely be different then the way some parents learned cursive, so please reference this information when helping you student. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT our scholars are forming their letters correctly.

Spelling Test on Friday! 
Don't forget your scholar has Spalding homework 
Monday-Thursday.
It is located inside their red folder.

Grammar - 

Scholars will be learning how to identify prepositions. They will be looking at different example sentences and looking at how to find these prepositions.

Prepositions: a joining word, it joins the noun to the rest of the sentence
Object of the Preposition: always comes after the prepositions and answers
Possessive Pronouns: a pronoun that replaces a possessive noun


History - 
Unit: Americans Move West
Scholars will be continue learning about Americans Move West. They will be learning about the Oregon Trial, the California Gold Rush, and the Pony Express.

Science -
Unit: Force, Motion, Energy, and Sounds
Scholars will experience and introduction to what makes up sound: vibrations. They will so be learning about 3 important people in history that contributed to sound and energy.

Literature -
Unit: Little House in the Big Woods
Ch. 3-4

Students will build reading comprehension by defining new vocabulary based on context, answering comprehension questions, and checking their predictions.

Please write your scholars name inside so if it gets misplaced it can be easily returned to them!

Reading Log-
Each day, students are reading a book from their home library for a minimum of 20 minutes. At home, students will read this book aloud to an adult.

Each day please log:
1. The title of the book from home.

2. The total minutes your student spent reading (20 minutes minimum each night).

3. Parent initials confirming minutes read. 

Please make sure you scholar is reading each night and this log is filled out and turned in on MONDAY!!

Poem -
"Open House" By: Aileen Fisher
DUE: March 9th
Please help your child practice nightly. They are required to speak the title, author and poem from memory in front of their classmates.
